History

V.I. Vernadsky Taurida National Universityis the leading higher educational and scientific institution of Crimea, founded in 1918. The University is top ten institutions of higher educational establishments in Ukraine. At the time of annexation of Crimean Peninsula, TNU was a state university of the IV level of accreditation.

The University had 16 faculties;there were 41 scientific fields to train students. The total number of students was 15 000 people, includeddaytime and part-time form of training. The university employed 2,244 employees, among them919 lecturers:112 Doctors of science, Professors, 485 Ph.Ds.Associate Professors, Senior lecturers and Assistants. Among them - one Hero of Ukraine, 39 Academicians of Academies of different profiles and countries, four laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine, 36 Honored workers of science and education of Ukraine, 53 Honored workers of the ARC in the sphere of education.

The outstanding public figures, scientists, teacherswho became the pride of Ukraine are associated with the name of our university. Among them:V.I. Vernadsky, A.F. Ioffe, A.A. Baikov; Nobel laureates I.E. Tamm and I.M. Frank, thrice Heroes of Socialist Labor I.V. Kurchatov and K.I. Shchelkin and many others, not less famous names that Alma Mater gave to our world.

Annually more than 100 employees and students of TNU have scientific and educational internship abroad.

MILESTONES OF HISTORY

The idea of ​​opening the V.I. Vernadsky Taurida National Universityappeared at the beginning of the last century during the wild years of the Civil War. Representatives of the scientific and creative intellectuals of the Russian Empire, who escaped from the Bolshevik invasion, settled in Crimea. The University began its history from the Decree of the Crimean Territorial Government No. 23 of September 3, 1918 "On the Establishment of the Taurida University".

By the fall of 1918, the Taurida University had been fully staffed with lecturers of the highest qualification.The solemn opening of the Taurida University in Simferopol was held on 14, October.

Academician V.I. Vernadsky who headed the university in October 1920, noted that at that time the Taurida University "was one of the most powerful scientific schools in the country."

The Taurida University had worked for two years and a half and then, in January 1921,the university was renamedto the Crimean University named after M.V. Frunze.

In 1925 itwas recalled the Crimean State Pedagogical Institute and only in 1972 itagain became university- Simferopol State University named after. M.V. Frunze.

In August 1999, by the Decree of the President of Ukraine L.D. Kuchmathe university was given the status of a national and the historical name was returned.

SCIENTIFIC-INNOVATIVE POTENTIAL

By the time of the annexation of Crimea 304 Ph.D. students and 37 applicants studied in 53 specialties in postgraduate training program. There were doctoral studies in19 specialties. Annually 40-45 Ph.D. thesis and 10 habilitational thesiswere defended at the university. All necessary conditions to carry out scientific work were created in the university.

TNU developed such research areas as human health, environmental protection, resource-saving technologies, new substances and materials, promising information systems. Annually the university held more than 70 international conferences, many of which became traditional. The University scientists published more than 2500 scientific works every year, including about 55 monographs, 1916 articles of which more than 110 are in leading foreign journals.

The research complex of the University includedlarge divisions and laboratories at the departments before the annexation. Among them: the research center "Technologies of sustainable development"; Biotechnology Center; Educational and scientific laboratory of computer software; Regional information and analytical center of the environmental monitoring system of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea; "Law Clinic"; Center for simultaneous translation; Botanical Garden; Zoo museum; Scientific library. The fund of the Librarycontains 1 million 190 thousand books and documents,etc.

In addition, the university had its own base of educational practice in biology and geography located in the mountain forest area of Crimea.

UNIVERSITY TODAY

On September 26, 2016 in the assembly hall of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine V.I. Vernadsky Taurida National University, which moved to Kyiv from annexed Crimea, was inaugurated.

We started a new chapter in the history of the glorious educational institution in Kyiv, native city for the university, where it was conceived and founded by Volodymyr Vernadsky.

In 2016 there was the first intake of students into the renovated university.The university is 98 years oldbutit again did the first set of students as in the distant 1918 when on the initiative of Solomon of Crimea our founding fathers createdthe university!

There are full-time and part-time forms of study at the university. We are working on the introduction of distance learning. There are exchange programs for both student and teaching mobility.

OUR STUDENTS

In the beginning of 2016-2017 academic year, 237 first-year students were enrolled in higher educational institutions. The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine granted the University the exclusive right to enroll students from the occupied territories during the whole year, now their number is about 3,000.

Not only Ukrainian citizens are studying in the University, but also students from other countries: Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, India, Bangladesh, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Libya. Of these, about 15 students study in the main faculties and 50 students train in the pre-university courses.

TNU rehabilitates partnerships with European universities so that the University graduates can study in dual education programs and receive both a Ukrainian diploma and a European certificate.

V.I. Vernadsky Taurida National University signed an agreement on scientific cooperation with the Open University of Switzerland. The agreement provides for the joint work of the two universities to implement the program of double diplomas, research, the exchange of teachers and students, as well as educational programs.

Students of V.I. Vernadsky have an opportunity to study economics and management within the framework of a three-year international program, in full-time and part-time forms of study in Ukraine and Poland. Graduates of the university will receive not only the proper Ukrainian diplomas, but also a diploma of the Polish university accredited in the EU.

Development and prospects

The University plans further structural changes. The Ukrainian universities, which are still located in the occupied territory, are going to join the TNU.

The strategic goal of TNU for the next 10 years is the desire to build a new innovative higher education system, to become one of the best universities in Europe and the world. The new system will be based on a fundamentally different approachesfrom the Soviet ones to process of teaching and gaining knowledge. Students, like in Europe, will be able to choose the academic load of the main disciplines themselves and the number and intensity of additional special courses, which will help to optimize time and expenditures on secondary education subjects, improve the quality of the gained knowledge and increase the variability of education.

 

The main task of TNU is to provide graduates not only with the diplomas, but also with knowledge and skills as tools for their further development. Teaching will be conducted in four languages: Ukrainian, Russian, Crimean Tatar and English. The University is currently educating the future political and intellectual elite for the Crimea. The University current students will return to the Ukrainian Crimea to contribute to the development of the region.

The youth of our university aspire to visit Europe, to study at the best universities of the world, in order to get world experience and knowledge, then - return home and build Europe in Ukraine.

WHY OUR HIGHER INSTITUTION?

Taurida National University has great scientific, academic and practical potential. In a short time, in less than a year, the university managed to create its own infrastructure. Now there are two large educational buildings on the balance of the university. The faculties of humanities will be located on Kyryllivska Street in the historic building of the Kyiv specialisedschool, founded by SergiyGrushevsky, the father of the First Ukrainian President MykhailoGrushevsky. In the center of the city in Pechersk, on Ivan Kudriastreet, is the main educational building of the university.

Students and teachers of TNU live in four dormitories.

The educational and scientific potential of the university is formed and strengthened. The university signed agreements on cooperation and common use of research laboratories with leading Kyiv universities. To form its own research base, TNU participates in various grant programs and provides collaboration with a number of international donors.

There are two stadiums to work out and play sports. The opening of the media space "Open Area" is planned, there students will take part in master classes and develop their creative skills. The University has applied for a grant funding to carry out the project “E-University” to create common information network to unite students and lecturers of TNU as well as partner universities. The network will contribute to the free access to knowledge and information. TNU takes an active part in educational programs provided by the European Union. The university have already signed agreements on joint participation with several foreign universities within the Erasmus+ program. Also, the Taurida National University is cooperating with the British Council, the American Embassy, ​​the Fulbright Foundation and Soros Foundation within various educational projects. Now the distance learning program is being developed. The program will provide free access to the inhabitants of the temporarily occupied and uncontrolled territories of Ukraine to the qualitative European education, by creating modern educational on-line platforms inTaurida National University.

The University is working on obtaining funding for this project. According to the calculations of NGO "Crimea SOS" and NGO "Congress of Ukraine" there are more than 70 000 potential students in the occupied territory who want to become part of a Ukrainian democratic society.
